Climate Action Plan

At Hemington Primary School, we are passionate in our belief that even small schools can make a big difference. Our rural setting gives us a special opportunity to connect children directly with the natural world, helping them understand not only why caring for the planet matters, but also how they can play their part in protecting it.

We are proud to have published our Climate Action Plan, which sets out clear, practical steps we are taking to reduce our carbon footprint, protect biodiversity, and inspire the next generation of eco-leaders. We will be working towards the goals set out in the plan together with our Ecoteam. This year, we are working towards achieving Eco-Schools status, a nationally recognised award that celebrates schools making sustainability a core part of everyday life.

What We’re Doing

  • Energy & Carbon Reduction
We are monitoring our energy use through tools like Count Your Carbon and Energy Sparks. Our Eco Team will lead campaigns such as Switch Off Fortnight, encouraging pupils and staff to save energy every day.

  • Reducing Waste
From recycling pens and batteries, to reducing single-use plastics and composting food waste, our pupils are helping us cut down on unnecessary waste and think more carefully about the resources we use.

  • Water & Resilience
We plan to install water butts to collect rainwater, review our curriculum to include water conservation, and look at ways to use resources more efficiently in school.

  • Protecting Nature
We are creating wildlife-friendly spaces in our grounds, planting and caring for trees, and joining in projects such as the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch. Being surrounded by countryside makes this especially meaningful for our pupils, who can see the direct impact of their efforts.

  • Embedding Sustainability in Learning
Our curriculum is being adapted to highlight green skills, climate education, and the importance of environmental stewardship. Pupils are encouraged to take part in nature-based learning, gardening, and community eco-projects.

Our size is our strength. As a small school, we can involve every child in this journey, ensuring that sustainability is not an add-on but an embedded way of school life. With our beautiful rural surroundings as both classroom and inspiration, we aim to nurtute children who care for their environment, take positive action in their community and grow to be environmentally responsible citizens.

Together, with the support of staff, families, and our wider community, we are building a culture of care, responsibility, and hope for a greener future — and working towards Eco-Schools recognition is an exciting part of that journey.
