Personal Development including British Values at Hemington Primary School

Personal Development:

Wellbeing, including physical and mental health are a priority at Hemington Primary School.  All pupils have the opportunity to take part in enrichment activities throughout the year which allow them to be creative, active, investigative, inquisitive and to take risks.  Personal development extends beyond the classroom and our termly creative challenges provide opportunities for children to work individually and as part of a team.  Children play an active role in:

  • Raising money for a chosen charity
  • Engaging with our local community
  • Making decisions that influence the life of the school
  • Developing personal safety and wellbeing
  • Supporting projects that tackle global issues such as pollution

British Values:

The fundamental British values are identified as:

  • Democracy
  • The rule of law
  • Individual liberty
  • Mutual respect and tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

We promote these values through the whole range of our formal and informal curricular and extra-curricular activities. Weekly British Values assemblies explore these themes in a more formal way and allow children to discuss and reflect on what they know and how British Values impact their lives. This includes:

  • An understanding of how citizens can influence decision making through the democratic process.
  • An understanding that there is a separation of power between the executive and the judiciary and that, while some public bodies, such as the police and the army, can be held to account through Parliament, others, such as the courts, maintain independence.
  • An appreciation that living under the rule of law protects individual citizens and is essential for their wellbeing and safety.
  • An understanding that the freedom to hold other faiths and beliefs is protected in law.
  • An acceptance that people having different faiths or beliefs to oneself (or having none) should be accepted in the spirit of mutual tolerance and should not be the cause of prejudicial or discriminatory behaviour.
  • An understanding of the importance of identifying and combating discrimination.
